Celestial Voyage
WELCOME, TRAVELER, TO THE COSMIC VOYAGE.
We are the Yarn Social Space Station, a site to meet other travelers, stock up supplies for your missions, and learn about the Fiber Arts Universe. There are also corn dogs here. And a Travel Agency. We contain multitudes.
You have signed up for a mission to the Fibers Arts Universe. On this mission you will explore this universe by visiting its planets. As you explore these planets -- there are six known planets, but we believe there are many others yet to be discovered -- you'll send weekly missives back to the Space Station, reporting your findings and describing any experiments you've attempted. We encourage you to share your adventures, delights, pitfalls, distractions, wormholes, and any other relevant information you think would be helpful to or enjoyed by the Space Station or your fellow travelers.
Transmissions sent to us -- with the exception of those of a top secret nature and are therefore entirely confidential -- will be published to this very same Travel Log. Regular consultation of the Log is recommended for everyone, as learning from your fellow travelers can help you with your own explorations; perhaps you'll find a like-minded maker with whom to collaborate on a project, or learn from mistakes or mishaps of others to avoid the same in your own explorations.
The Travel Season begins June 1, 2026 and ends August 31, 2026. Below we set out the details of your mission and hopefully answer any questions you may have.
If any additional information is needed, you may reach out to us at office@yarnsocialkc.com.
As needed, we will update this report to include any such information we believe may be of use to other travelers.
PLANETARY GUIDE
There are currently six known planets in the Fiber Arts Universe, but we are certain that many have yet to be discovered or explored. With a little luck and a good sense of adventure, you have the opportunity to visit planets both known and potentially unknown; the choice is yours!
The Known Planets are as follows:
- Knitting: a multifaceted planet known for its oceans of stockinette, steep cable cliffs, and colorful, mosaic sunsets.
- Crochet: a welcoming planet where you’re likely to experience lacey foliage, whimsical creatures, and a desire to get off the beaten path. There are rumors this may be another binary planet; we hope one of you can confirm that!
- Spinning: a planet that spins quicker on its axis than its neighbors; a thrilling experience to be had for sure!
- Cross Stitch: this pixelated world is cherished for its diversity in views, slow growth, and proximity to the neighboring planet Embroidery.
- Embroidery: a textural dreamscape of a planet where the only limit to how long you can stay is how many provisions you brought with you.
- Needle Felting: a watercolor world completely inhabited by fluffy creatures. These creatures seem to multiply unpredictably and any two are rarely identical. Some say these creatures mimic those seen only in dreams, but more reports are needed to verify.
As we mentioned, we believe there are a multitude of Unknown Planets in our universe as well. These planets exist within the Fiber Arts Universe but have yet to be documented by the Yarn Social Space Station, so discoveries you make there are of particular importance in expanding our understanding of this universe. We are particularly eager to receive transmissions about any such unknown planets you may come across.
HOW TO VISIT PLANETS
Your exploration of a planet may happen in one of three ways:
-
Chart your course yourself! Choose your destination, plan your activities while on planet, decide your mode of transportation to the planet, and, once there, spend time learning and practicing the language and customs. Perhaps you are already familiar with a particular planet but have not explored what it has to offer in greater detail; such exploration will surely benefit future travelers and we encourage you to report back to us any learnings you find in these familiar worlds.
-
Visit our Travel Agency for a pre-bundled kit that will transport you effortlessly to any of the known planets. Our travel services remove the burden of arranging transportation yourself, so you may more quickly focus on the explorations, experiments, and learning you have planned on that planet.
The Travel Agency is only accessible in person at the Space Station. However, we may make pre-bundled kits available to remote travelers during the Travel Season via online means.
Please note: any trips arranged by the Travel Agency are taken at your own risk. However, while the Agency is not responsible for your safety on these trips, we do offer regular opportunities for you to seek help from other experienced travelers should you get stranded planet-side. You can learn more about these opportunities here.
- Sign up for a Guided Tour. Better known on the Space Station as a “class”, a Guided Tour is the ideal route for a stress-free visit to one of the Known Planets! No planning, no worries, just a great way to visit the planet of your choice and see some of the best sights with insider knowledge leading the way. We will be adding to our roster of Guided Tours throughout the Celestial Voyage, and we encourage you to keep an eye out for a Tour that might interest you here and here.
SENDING TRANSMISSIONS
Part of your mission this summer is to send weekly reports of your findings. We are always delighted to hear of your adventures and discoveries; we will happily commiserate with you about any wrong turns or pitfalls you may endure; and we are particularly eager to learn about new worlds, new creatures, new anything that you may come across.
The Yarn Social Space Station will publish the transmissions to this Travel Log, allowing other voyagers to read about, be entertained by, and learn from your travels during the summer. PLEASE NOTE: you must subscribe to the Yarn Social Space Station's email list to receive notifications about your mission,
To send a transmission, simply type your message, attach a photo or video link if you’d like, and email your transmission to office@yarnsocialkc.com. In order to help the Space Station to stay organized, we ask you to label your transmissions with one of the following three subject lines:
-
Public Transmission: YOUR NAME
These messages will be posted to the log along with your first name.
-
Intercepted Transmission: YOUR NAME
We understand the desire for secrecy for some voyagers. In this instance, your message will be posted to the Log, but the sender will remain anonymous.
-
Top Secret Transmission: YOUR NAME
Certain findings may be of such a nature that you do not wish for them to be shared beyond the Space Station. We respect any need for secrecy and so these messages will not be published at all and their sending will be kept a secret, but The Space Station will know you’re still working on completing your mission (particularly necessary so you may receive your appropriate compensation for your efforts as described below).
COMPENSATION FOR YOUR EXPLORATORY WORK
For Voyagers who choose the paid option, in exchange for your efforts in exploring planets and sharing information about your travels, you will be awarded points that can be redeemed at the Yarn Social Space Station for supplies needed for future travels throughout the Fiber Arts Universe.
Which planets you visit and how you spend your time on any given planet is up to you, but we recommend spending around 2-4 weeks in total on each planet you visit over the course of the Travel Season, as that sort of extended visit will allow you to become more deeply accustomed to the way of life on that world.
Points may be earned in two ways:
- For every planet you visit (known or currently unknown), you will be awarded 10 points, for a maximum of 30 points total. There is no limit to the number of planets you may visit during the travel season, but points will only be awarded for three of those planets. In addition, multiple visits to the same planet often happens; however you will only be compensated for one of those multiple visits.
- Weekly transmissions will be awarded 2 points. (For the purposes of the Cosmic Voyage, a week at the Space Station is measured from Monday to Sunday.) You are welcome to submit multiple transmissions in any week, or to report the results of your travels on other platforms available to you, but you will only earn points for one transmission per week sent to the Space Station, for a maximum total of 28 points through the Travel Season.
Note: The Travel Season ends on a Monday, meaning that the 14th week of the Travel Season is technically only one day long. We encourage you to send a transmission on that last day if you want to maximize your compensation.
All earned points will be added to your Yarn Social Space Station account no later than September 10. This will allow you to use any points at the Space Station during our autumnal event, the KC Yarn Crawl (happening September 17-20). Keep in mind, points do not expire so once added to your account you may use them at the time of your choosing.
One-half of the paid option fee will be contributed to Harvesters, the Community Food Network.
